What is sea freight consolidation
Sea freight consolidation, also known as LCL (Less than Container Load), is based on a simple principle: several shippers share the same container. Since their goods don't individually fill an entire container, this pooling helps optimize available space.
Billing by volume or weight
Each client pays based on their own share of goods. The calculation is based on volume, expressed in m³, or on weight — whichever is more advantageous. This makes the solution particularly cost-effective for small quantities, since importers only pay for what they actually use.
Trade-offs to be aware of
That said, consolidation comes with certain trade-offs. Transit times are somewhat longer, mainly because the container must first be consolidated, then deconsolidated upon arrival. There's also a slightly higher handling risk, as goods are moved and handled multiple times.
The difference with FCL
Consolidation stands in direct contrast to FCL, or Full Container Load, where the importer books an entire container for exclusive use. This makes transport faster and safer, since the goods aren't mixed with other clients' shipments. However, this option only becomes cost-effective from a certain volume onward.

Ultimately, the choice between LCL and FCL depends primarily on the quantity being shipped, as each solution meets different logistics needs.
